NEW STORY IDEA IS NEW

Iiiiiiiii don't even know.

I watched Repo! The Genetic Opera and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl last night, one right after the other, and my brain went crack-headed.

So I ended up writing out about 5 pages of story ideas at like... 3 in the morning... it's weird.

The story is under the working name 'Hydra', but I really need a new title. It's steampunk/aquaworld/PIRATEWORLD and it's awesome but confusing.

The setting is Earth, but years in the future, after global warming has caused most of the world to be covered in water. The population is tiny, though, as only the very lucky were able to survive, and thus there is a single central government looking over things. Humans have evolved to be able to stand the heat, drink water with a higher salt concentration, and are more muscular in order to row boats for longer to travel and survive.

Three 'breeds' of people crop up as a result of different conditions.

1. The islanders, who live in marshlands/wetlands in manufactured floating houses. Not the richest of people, but they live fairly comfortably. However, they're constantly forced to rebuild their houses because they can't afford long-lasting supplies. Their skin tone ranges from very tan to completely black, and have hair ranging from medium blonde to white. They are muscular, but less muscular then sailors. They are the tallest, usually 5 foot 8 to 7 feet. Their society is the most organized, and the most similar to the present, and most of the members of the central government are islanders.

2. The pirates, who live in the 'cliff cities'. Cliff cities formed over actual cities- cities that, after being covered by water, still had dangerous chemicals (think smoggy, unhealthy cities). These chemicals, under the pressure of being miles underwater (yes, I know the science is dubious, it's not supposed to be science fiction anyway) formed rock and eventually started forming cliffs and caves, some of which reach the surface. These cliffs and caves serve as pirate hideouts very often. The pirate 'breed', having lived in the cliff cities for generations, build up an immunity to the harmful chemicals there. The pirate 'breed' also developed unusual skin in reaction to the chemicals. Their skin is thicker than normal- even leathery or scaled in some places- and are unusual colors due to the chemicals (yes, this was mostly an excuse to have multi-colored pirates, SHUDDUP), and black hair (hair is unrelated to chemicals). Most of the members of the pirate 'breed' are, big duh, pirates, and participate in the expected burning and pillaging. They are small, 5 and a half feet at the tallest, and their build is muscular but very lean, as they evolved for better speed. They are the shortest and the least muscular, but the fastest.

3. The sailors, most of which live out at sea. Sailors refer to a wide range of genetics, though if someone is noticably pirate or islander but has sailor blood, they are usually refered to as a pirate sailor or an island sailor. As such, there are a variety of traits, but a large portion of sailors form a breed of their own, who live, from birth to death, only out at sea. Pirate sailors and island sailors tend to inherit a few sailor traits, but not all of them. The ' pureblood' sailors are the most normal looking, with a capacity for more normal colors of hair (like brunette or red) and possibly paler skin. They are the most muscular, having evolved out at sea and needing the muscle mass to constantly crew the ships. Due to their muscle mass, they are usually androgenous, the biggest difference being that the females have slightly wider hips and less muscle mass. Their height and speed, however, range greatly. They are merchants- some very wealthy by legal means, or low-level pirates- not very wealthy by illegal means, or simply live out at sea- providing entertainment venues like theatres for pirates and islander merchants (those who live in an island area, but sell out at sea), or fending for themselves and managing to be completely self-sufficient.

And there is something that I think may be central to the plot:
The pill.
Most trade is done with pirates, but few not-pirates are able to withstand the toxins in the cliff cities. The pill provides temporary protection from the dangerous chemicals, and is sold illegally quite often. There is also widespread abuse of the pill, as a high enough dose will make a person unable to feel pain. (again, dubious science, but eh).

I have a few characters in my head as well: Ezra, Milona, Quin, and Francis.

Ezra is an islander. He's about 15 years old (somewhere between 13 and 15), has dark tan skin and white-tinged-blonde hair. He has a personality similar to Holden Caulfield (kinda... sorta.... half-way the same?). He is very distrusting of adults and authority, and has a bit of a peter pan complex as well. He is very afraid of storms. He's very jaded. He used to live in one of the more impoverished islands. Because the island consisted mostly of women and provided few workers, it was provided with low quality building materials, so none of the houses lasted long (thus, his distate for government). He experiences a certain level of self-loathing as well, because he is cowardly. He is very afraid of storms. He bought a boat and started living on his own at the age of 10 (he didn't really run away from home- his mother was aware of everything, and it isn't actually that unusual in the story's setting). He sells pills illegally. He becomes even more jaded when he sells pills to his childhood hero, Francis. He experiences a certain level of self-loathing, because he recognizes his own cowardice in Francis. Though very jaded, he does have a sense of right and wrong, and is not often violent. He is very friendly, if not given a reason to distrust someone (meaning, he's mostly nice to kids his age or younger).

Milona is a pirate. She's about 18 years old, has pastel periwinkle skin (...what?), and very straight, very long black hair. She is a member of a family ('clan', sort of) of pirates bred for tough skin. She has plates of scales on her body. She has one plate on her forehead, giving her a very far-back hairline. She is soft spoken and motherly, but is secretly Ezra's provider. She works in a mill in a cliff city that manufactures the pill, and she sneaks misshapen pills to Ezra. Ezra loves her dearly (like an older sister- she is one of few adults that he trusts) but also hates that she, though quiet, is fearless.

Quin is a sailor. She has red hair and fairly pale skin with freckles. She is about the same age as Ezra (probably a year or so younger- 13 or 14). She looks very androgenous because she is not fully grown, so her hips haven't widened yet. She was born with the rare trait, limited to sailors, of having skin that more readily absorbs moisture. Quin is among a small group of sailors with the trait, who weren't bred for it- it is a completely random mutation. It is also a dangerous mutation, as their skin also more readily absorbs everything else, making it hazardous to be exposed to even trace amounts of cliff city chemicals. She needs a constant supply of the pill to simply survive out at sea. Ezra is Quin's provider, and slips her free doses whenever he can afford it.

Francis is a 'romantic pirate'- he's actually an island sailor (more islander than anything else), but has enough pirate genetics that he has green skin. He would go to Ezra's village and talk about pirating as if the reality was the romantic image of pirates (y'know, halloween belt, ARR MATEY, all that), and his tales of fearless adventure made him Ezra's childhood hero. When Francis was about 30, he was attacked by actual pirates, who stole everything from him. He lost all of his wealth at once (which, in reality, he had gained from selling pills LEGALLY as well as gambling- not from pirating), and at the age of 50 (as he appears in the story), he is completely washed up. Ezra becomes more jaded upon seeing the low state of his childhood idol. He ends up being one of Ezra's clients- specifically, one of Ezra's clients that abuse the pill for the feeling of invincibility.

AAAAAAAAAND I think that's all I have so far.
lol idk.
That's what I get for watching scifi and pirate movies in the same night. xD
